For the setting of total ink limits, you can set in either RIP side or 3rd party profiler.
I have ever created ICC profiles with the combination of Wasatch+I1Profiler for several times and was not aware of that shadow issue you mentioned  |
If you want to see it for yourself. Select your printer as General FileOut . Wasatch will make a CMYK TIFF file. You can use that tiff to examine the effect of Total Ink Limiting.
Open it in Photoshop or something similar and sample the Color values
